Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in the United States. It is nearly as common as prostate and breast cancer but has a much higher number of cancer deaths per year. Early detection of lung cancer can increase the five-year survival from about 3.5% to 50%.

Lung cancer screening is recommended for high-risk patients, including patients 55 years of age or older who are current smokers, or former smokers who have quit in the last 15 years, with at least a 30 pack year history of smoking. Screening is also recommended in patients aged 50 or older with at least a 20 pack year history of smoking and one other risk factor for lung cancer, such as asbestos or radon exposure.

For more information, see the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Guidelines for patients. If you are interested in being screened, please contact your doctor.
